Des Moines-based artist Teri Underhill returns today with her latest single Rise. The new single has seen the singer/songwriter, dancer, poet, creative, producer, and author team up with rapper GodIsMikey for the release.

Underhill comes from a diverse background with Polynesian, Puerto Rican, English and German roots and was exposed to a variety of music growing up that influenced her creative path in music. What makes this artist especially compelling is how she uses her voice to advocate for mental health awareness and autism awareness, doing so based on her own experiences. Growing up, Teri struggled with autism and severe anxiety. This led to her being known as the “shy, quiet” girl – that is, except for when she was given the microphone and became empowered to tap into the musical gift inherited from her great-Samoan grandmother. This gift, coupled with her overcoming adversity has resulted in Teri Underhill’s music as an inspiringly honest and detailed, no-holds-bar account of her life. Underhill has already been dubbed “an undeniable talent” by the legendary Joel Rafael of Vigilantes of Love.

Rise is an unconventional and defiant hip-hop-tinged track with charismatic vocal delivery featured alongside some chilled bars from GodIsMikey and intermittent background gang vocals, over a minimalist production as Underhill sings lyrics about determination and fortitude against the odds: “you can try to take me down / you can try to spin my words around / you can kick me to the dust / and in the ashes, I’ll rise”.

Speaking about Rise, Teri said, “Rise is about reminding yourself you will rise from tough times. To keep fighting during trying times. To stay a warrior, to stay strong, and that you will get through this rough time just like all the other rough times before.”
