Chilean-born, London-raised, model-turned-songstress, Amber Donoso, talks London and Paris fashion weeks, Gwen Stefani, Lauryn Hill, her mother’s sense of style and she premieres on FM, her excitingly lush dance debut single, called ‘Get Off’ (released via DITTO on November 3). A track about her ex boyfriend and the journey of their relationship…
How are you today Amber?
I am very well thank you. It’s a beautiful day here in London so I’m feeling very positive.
Tell us everything we should know about your debut track ‘Get Off’.
Oh gosh… where to start. I wrote the track a year and a half ago up in Glasgow. The track is about my ex boyfriend and the journey of our relationship. The main theme of the track is feeling unable to move on from your first love and how frustrating it can be to want to move on but for some reason not being able to.
The video for Get Off is about to be released and this also shows a clear representation of the above through visuals. As an artist I take a lot of pride in having control over everything I do, so it’s all really exciting for me to put my material out and see what everyone thinks.
Can you tell us a bit about your transition from the catwalk to the stage...
I signed as a model at 16 years old. I worked primarily in London and Paris participating in fashion weeks and the couture shows. I also worked closely with sports brands, one being Adidas who were very supportive of my music.
Nevertheless, music has always been my priority. Since the young age of 10 I’ve been working towards my goal, using modelling as a platform to help finance my music.
How would you describe your fashion style?
I grew up looking at artists like Gwen Stefani and Christina Aguilera and just thought they looked so cool. I always massively admired my mothers sense of style so definitely took a lot of inspiration from her. If I was to describe my sense of style in one word it would be a ‘crop top’.
Which animal would best suit your personality?
Hmmm, definitely something full of energy. Probably a very excited antelope.
What kind of music are you listening these days?
A bit of everything to be honest. In summary it would be Cardi B, Kodie Shane, Pale Waves, Madonna. So very varied.
Who are your musical (and non musical) icons?
I’m a big Lauryn Hill fan. I love her beautiful story telling in her music, it’s very inspiring to me. A few others would be Michael Jackson, Chris Brown and finally Gwen Stefani. All for completely different reasons.
What does the rest of 2017 hold for you.
ALOT. It’s an understatement to say I’m excited. We’ve got the release of Get Off’s music video coming up in a couple of weeks followed by more singles, and a few other very exciting things I’m not quite allowed to say yet! Definitely keep your eyes peeled.
