American singer-songwriter, guitarist, pianist, producer, and podcaster Trevor Ohlsen presents his fresh & feel-good pop tune called i’ve got a girlfriend, but i like you, inspired by a night of fun he had after playing a festival gig in Ohio.
Hi Trevor! Thanks for taking the time to chat with us. How are you doing?
My pleasure, I’m doing excellent. I’m currently on a four week solo road trip around the country exploring and having fun. It’s been a really cool experience doing it solo and I highly recommend it.
Who are some of your biggest musical and non-musical inspirations and why?
Musical inspirations would include John Mayer, Ed Sheeran, Passenger, and Lauv. Of course there’s more but I really love these guys. Their songwriting styles are so vulnerable and honest, something I’ve always tried to do with my own writing. And they’re all quite fantastic live, something I’ve always strived to do well. It’s always a bummer to fall in love with an artist and find out they’re horrible live.
Non-musical inspirations would be Joe Rogan, Jordan Peterson, Jocko Willink, and The Rock to start. These are just badass dudes who perpetually seek growth, self discipline, and personal daily improvement. I’m big on all of that.
What are you thinking right now?
The five hour drive I have to Yellowstone National Park today and whether or not I’ll hit a snowstorm along the way.
What was the first album you bought?
I can’t remember the first one I bought, but I do remember the first one I fell in love with being John Mayer’s Room For Squares.
Tell us everything we should know about your latest release ‘I’ve got a girlfriend, but i like you’
‘i’ve got a girlfriend, but i like you’ was inspired by a night of fun I had after playing a festival gig in Ohio. I went out to Cleveland afterward with a buddy and ended up meeting this really fun, really open bisexual woman. She dragged us around the city drinking and smoking weed and it was just quite a fun night.
The version you’re hearing is technically the second version. I had recorded the whole song previously but decided to scrap it and redo it. I’m glad I did because I like this version much better.

Mind blowingly spectacular for sure. (haha)
Do you have any exciting plans for your music in 2021 to share with us?
Apart from the release of this single and the new album, I’m excited to hopefully continue traveling, work on the new live show, and get back into writing mode for whatever comes next.
