Rising German-Australian musician / composer Evan Klar shares a slice of his special alt-pop delight with new single Illusions, out now via cult Berlin label Grönland Records.
What was the first album you bought?
My dad had a crazy CD collection so I don’t remember buying a record myself but the one I would sneak off him most was Nirvana’s Nevermind, Im still listening to that one.
Who are some of your biggest musical inspirations and why?
Such a hard question but I’ve been listening to a lot of Frank Ocean, Sza, Sad Boys, Mac Miller. I feel like the best inspiration comes from the artists around me, the ones I’m lucky to be in the studio with. Recently I’ve written with Kilian & Jo, Ainslie Wills, Kate Miller-Heidke, Emily James to name a few.
What are some non-musical inspirations that motivate your music?
I’ve been trying hard to keep healthy and happy. Like making sure im eating good clean food and skateboarding heaps. Never would have guessed that kinda thing would make its way into the narrative but self care seems to have taken over my writings.
Tell us about your new single ILLUSIONS?
Hell yeah! Its felt so good putting illusions out. There’s a lot of subconscious going on but I think I’m trying to share what I’ve been learning in my own life recently.. like practicing self care, exhaling all the bad stuff out and gathering healthy tricks that actually work. I guess in the song I’m calling the tricks illusions.
What have you got lined up for 2021?
Im definitely gonna release a lot of music this year. I’ve been writing and recording an EP which will be out real soon and I’m currently filming two music videos for some upcoming singles. More than ever I just can’t wait to share everything.
