Wading through the murky waters of confusion surrounding a newly-discovered identity is not easy. But coming out on the other side with a new lease of life is what makes it all worth it. British singer-songwriter ettie has achieved this feat, and she has the lyrics to prove it. Now an out queer artist, ettie is no longer holding back in her music, and the proof is in her latest release – Until I Met U.
In this dynamic alt-pop track, the self-described ‘’anxious, gay, caffeinated’’ artist explores her feelings in a new relationship, with refreshingly honest lyrics on a backdrop of pop-punk perfection. The song offers an undeniable throwback quality, and ettie’s effortlessly lush vocals fit snugly around the crash and thrash of drums and guitars, all tied up with an insanely catchy hook. ettie notes that “I’ve never had a heartbeat so intense” and questions “am I in over my head?” before the song speeds up energetically into the chorus accented by a memorable na na na chant over punchy electric guitar lines. Love can be especially challenging when there are parts of us that need healing, which the lyrics also refer to. She admits that it isn’t until she finds herself in love that she grapples with how important it is to be a little vulnerable in order to be open to something real.
Following the viral success of ettie‘s single, I’m Sorry to my Exes from her debut EP Manic Pixie Dream Girl, where she tries to assure her ex-boyfriends that ‘’it’s not you, it’s me – no, really!’’, Until I Met U is a romping celebration of identity, queerness, and above all, love.
