DR Who writer Steven Moffat has denied reports naming Coleraine actor James Nesbitt as the new Time Lord.
Claims were made by a leading paper that the Murphy’s Law star was to join the BBC sci-fi series when current Doctor David Tennant steps down but Moffat says there is no truth in the rumours.
He told the Outpost Gallifrey forums: “The James Nesbitt story is a total fabrication. A fantasy. Just a guy sitting at a desk and inventing stuff.
“I wasn’t going to say anything but I’m getting embarrassed for the wonderful Jimmy Nesbitt. So tell everyone please, it’s getting very silly.”
The 42 year-old actor recently wowed critics for his performance in the BBC drama Jekyll, with many TV pundits speculating this role was an audition for Dr Who.
The Cold Feet star is currently filming Cinderella with Shameless actress Maxine Peake.
The second of four comedy dramas created by Northern Ireland’s Hat Trick Productions, Cinderella is part of a new BBC series interpreting fairy tales in a modern day setting.
