Talented Latin powerhouse Di WAV talks to us and presents her second EP Despierta, inspired by the loneliness and dark vibe of the pandemic. To get a taste of her lushly ethereal sound, Guatemalan – Swiss artist Daniela Carpio (her real name), pays tribute to one of her greatest inspirations, covering beautifully Depeche Mode’s classic tune Precious…
What’s amazing to me is that a lot of people have expressed feeling the same way and connecting with my songs and the EP vibes.
What are you thinking right now?…
How much I miss playing live. I had a tour planned for 2020 that obviously did not happen. I will be so happy once we can take the stage again.
Who are some of your biggest musical and non-musical inspirations and why?
I’m a rebel at heart. Always have loved different voices, sounds and personalities. Musically I can mention Depeche Mode, The Cure, Gustavo Cerati, Nirvana, Madonna, Queen, David Bowie and recently artists like Lana del Rey, Bad Bunny or Billie Eilish. They all were willing to take chances in their lives while being different and embracing that. It’s important to be true to yourself and watching that is so inspiring. My mom would be a great inspiration for me as well, she is a very strong woman who has taught me to focus and work. The rest falls into place eventually.
What was the first album you bought?
I believe it was the record “Like a Prayer” by Madonna. I remember it was a cassette.
Tell us everything we should know about your stunning cover of Depeche Mode’s ‘Precious’
First of all, I’m a huge Depeche Mode fan. I love their songs, their sound and the message they send with their music. I’ve always loved this song… It takes me to a very vulnerable place. The lyrics and the message are so beautiful. Last year while wrapping up the EP my producer Marthin Chan was like “Let’s do a Depeche Mode Cover” and immediately this song came into mind. The rest is history. All I can say is that I was a bit nervous about covering my idols, but was very happy with the ending result. Hopefully Depeche Mode hears it someday and enjoys it! That would make my heart smile.
What inspired you to write your EP ‘Despierta’ (produced by five-time Latin Grammy nominee Marthin Chan and Grammy winner Reuven Amiel):
Loneliness was the biggest inspiration for Despierta. Focusing on music helped me get through 2020. I now realize I was very depressed and sad during quarantine, although I did not realize it until now. I had a lot to say and I did not know it until I started writing. It felt more like an emotional transition for me musically than an EP. What’s amazing to me is that a lot of people have expressed feeling the same way and connecting with my songs and the EP vibes.
