Des Bishop
Following on from the hugely successful sell-out ‘FITTING IN’ tour, enjoyed by over 100,000 comedy fans across the country, Des Bishop is back with a totally original and inspired new live stand-up show, ‘TONGUES’!Due to phenomenal demand extra dates have been added for his Vicar St. dates. Sat Sept 22nd and October 13th are on sale now, Also Des has added a special Matinee show for his under 18s fans on Sept 29th.

‘TONGUES’ deals with an entirely new challenge for Des, where he took the ultimate step towards Irishness by moving to the Gaeltacht to learn his mother tongue. Never one for half measures, Des moved to Connemara in spring 2007, to embrace what so many Irish people have avoided, our own native tongue. Des explores the lighter side of life learning to speak Irish in Connemara, something which has strong memories for many Irish people. Describing his attempts to grasp the language, Des brings his new found passion for Gaeilge to life with unparalleled energy and comic genius.

The second half of the show sees Des explore the religious side of his identity, from his early days as St. Kevin Church’s youngest altar boy with a tendency to be overly theatrical, to his experiences with people who have the power to speak in tongues. What follows promises to be a blistering night of stand-up comedy, where Des explores his Irish identity – his language and religion – challenging those that speak in tongues while struggling to learn his own! Prepare for some fresh and highly provocative comedy, as a comic at the very height of his powers demonstrates the success of his encampment in the heart of Connemara, and confronts the idiocies of Christian fundamentalism.

Since Bishop’s second TV show, ‘Joy in the Hood’ (RTE 2) aired to huge audiences and generated equal amounts of controversy in January 2006, Des toured with his record breaking live show, ‘FITTING IN’ and released his live DVD of the same name in November 2006. The ‘FITTING IN’ Tour and DVD focused on some of Des’s experiences filming ‘Joy in the Hood’, which featured the comedian teaching stand-up comedy whilst living in a range of marginalized communities, including Knocknaheeny in Cork, Southill in Limerick and Mount Vernon in Belfast. Des Bishop is currently working on a new documentary for RTE which will hit Irish TV screens in early 2008.

Undoubtedly one of the most enigmatic comedic forces in Ireland, Des Bishop has released three stand-up DVDs including ‘Des Bishop Live on DVD’ which secured a position in the top ten for the busy Christmas period in 2005. Since exploding onto our TV screens in 2004 with his acclaimed show ‘The Des Bishop Work Experience’ (RTE 2), Des has established himself as one of Ireland’s greatest comedians. He has performed at some of the World’s most prestigious comedy festivals including Aspen, Edinburgh, and Ireland’s own Cat Laughs Festival and has penned two stage plays in collaboration with Arthur Riordan.
