Paris duo DALHIA unveil a slice of dark-pop with their new single VIVA 4 EVER and answer our QuickFire Questions.

DALHIA Quick Fire Qs

What was the first album you bought?

Rachel: the first record I bought was ‘Born to make you happy’ by Britney Spears. I was dancing on the record, great memories Ahah. I’m still a huge fan. I really wanted to sing because of her!

Simon: For me, it was Daft Punk “around the world”. It was vinyl with only 4 tracks: Around The World radio edit, Around The World LP version, teachers extended mix, and around the world motorbass remix. I was listening to the record all day!

Who are some of your biggest musical inspirations and why?

Rachel: For me, there are several influences but if I need to identify two movements I would say hip hop and RnB on one side and the whole new wave and post-punk scene on the other. In both I found the sound really powerful and I like the synths and the power of the words. I think it’s hard to list and talk about all influences. I really like POP too, the most important thing is the power of melodies. For example, MGMT, The Weeknd, Sebastien Tellier or Michel Polnaref are major artists to me.

Simon: Sufjan Stevens is one of the biggest influences on me. He’s really eclectic and made some of the best records in several years. I like his sound and the work on Illinois and I like the sensitivity on Carrie & Lowell. He’s one of the most versatile artists I know.

What are some non-musical inspirations that motivate your music?

Rachel: I am very inspired by my psychoanalytic readings.

Simon: The movies are a big part of the inspiration to me. Some directors are just inspiring me. I like the stories, the mood, or the sound designs. Particularly love the mood of Dario Argento’s movies.

Tell us about your single ‘VIVA 4 EVER’?

Viva 4 Ever is a song about friendship, love, and family disappointments. It’s a willingness to stay strong and upright. It’s important to face events that occur. Viva 4 Ever means to live despite everything that happens. It’s also a nod to a spice girl song called Viva forever that I really appreciated.
