Exciting Dutch duo CUT_ return with CRY, another slice of their smartly catchy pop vibes, out now via [PIAS] Recordings
What was the first album you bought?
Belle: Secrets by Toni Braxton, I was nine years old.
Seb: Limp Bizkit – Chocolate starfish and the hotdog flavoured water. I grew up on nu-metal in the nineties. Now and then you will still hear some System of a Down blazing in our tourbus.
Who are some of your biggest musical inspirations and why?
Belle: For me it depends which aspect we’re talking about. For sound production wise I turn to artists such as Jamie XX or Fever Ray, for songwriting writers like Sia, Billie Eilish, Charlie Puth and many more create killer lines and lyrics. They are able to condense the core of a song in one line. It’s one of the most difficult things to do when you write a song. When I check out vocal sounds I love Rosalía, the Knife, Sabrina Claudio.
Seb: For me that changes every half year or so. I’ve had times where I drew a lot of inspiration from Hip-hop records and I really dive in deep trying to find out how certain records are made. Right now i’m listening a lot to middle eastern influenced dance music like Khidja, Red Axes and Acid Arab. I find it extremely interesting how they can creatie a lot of energy with just a instruments in the tracks. I’m the direct opposite production wise.
What are some non-musical inspirations that motivate your music?
Belle: Literature is a big one for me. Several songs of us are based on classics like “1984″, “The picture of Dorian Gray”, Stories by Chekhov, the Greek Myths… You name it!
Seb: I don’t think there is anything outside music that directly translates to music for me. I really like to going to see art exhibitions but that is rather to distract myself from thinking about music and diving into another world. In my mind I’m constantly thinking about what I want to make next so I rather try to find distractions than inspiration.
Tell us about your new single for CRY?
Cry is basically and ode to friendship. We all have those moments you have to be there for your friend who is going through something. Cry talks about the powerless position you’re in at that moment. You cannot solve the problem for your friend all you can do is be there and stand by them. You’ll be waiting right here.
What can we expect from you in 2020?
Belle: Hopefully we can do some gigs at some point in the year! For the rest we’ll be bringing out a lot of new tunes.
Seb: Yeah we have have some intimate show shows planned for later this year but we can not wait to play for a full crowd again! We also plan to put a song out every month starting with Cry.
