Dr. Gunther von Hagensâ€™s today visit to Manchester is proving to be a hot ticket. Places for his first ever UK lecture have all been snapped up and he will lecture to a capacity audience at the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) Manchester .
The lecture, in association with MOSI and Scalpel, the Manchester Medics Surgical Society, will explore the invention, development and issues surrounding the Plastination technique, the groundbreaking method of halting decomposition of the body after death and preserving it for anatomical study, invented by Dr von Hagens in 1977. The lecture will be followed by questions and answers from the audience.
To cope with demand BODY WORLDS 4 and MOSI are organising a live on-site simulcast and web cast.
Commenting on von Hagensâ€™ forthcoming lecture, Tony Hill, Acting Director MOSI said: â€˜Dr von Hagensâ€™ lecture is eagerly anticipated and has attracted considerable attention. In addition to the lecture, Dr von Hagensâ€™ visit will see him meeting a wide array of Manchesterâ€™s citizens. At 9.00 AM, Friday the 23rd May he will meet and personally thank the MOSI team who have helped ensure the success of the BODY WORLDS 4 exhibition. Following this, at 11.00 AM, he will meet a party of science students from Hollingworth Business and Enterprise College, Rochdale. The students won the unique opportunity to quiz the world-renowned scientist in a draw for North West senior schools organised by BODY WORLDS 4 and MOSI.
The students will arrive at the museum at 10.30 on Friday morning for a guided tour of the world premiere of the exhibition followed by a question and answer session with Dr von Hagens. Nichola Mortimer, Hollingworthâ€™s Assitant Programme Director of Science, said: â€˜We are always looking for new ways to bring science to life for our students, and I am delighted by this wonderful opportunity to visit the exhibition and meet Dr von Hagens. All the students are looking forward to what should be a really exciting educational experience.â€™
On Saturday the 24th May, Dr von Hagens will be on hand to greet visitors to the BODY WORLDS 4 exhibition, 1830 Warehouse, Museum of Science and Industry, from between 4.00 and 6.00 PM. This will be followed by an exclusive evening awarded to 20 lucky Manchester Confidential readers who will have the opportunity to chat informally with him.
