Baltimore-based Brazilian alternative rock newcomer I Am Night has shared her debut EP Returning. The project includes five tracks, including the lead singles Break Me Down and Delayed Afterlight.
I Am Night, also known as Natália Borges de Oliveira, has written and composed the project by herself. In the very beginning she didn’t even aim for an EP. “I was working 12-hour shifts at restaurants and just writing in my spare time. I would be washing dishes or buying groceries and just come up with random melodies or sentences that I instantly recorded on my phone”, she says.
She recorded her ideas for lyrics and instrumentation with GarageBand and created her first demos this way. This is how Delayed Afterlight and the entirety of It Is Me actually came to life. The EP was produced by Virginia musician, producer and engineer Jack Kilby with additional support from Eliot Seppa on Bass, Micha Robinson on keys and synths, and John Lee on guitar.
The opening track Delayed Afterlight welcomes you with driving drums and guitar arrangements. After this the project goes on with the catchy rock lead single It Is Me. The hopeful tune Let It Go is led by lush harmonies and a glorious sax solo.
The most intimate song is What I Am which closes the project and sees I Am Night talking about depression and very personal thoughts. About the current situation with Covid-19 she says, “It’s good to feel like I may have something good to offer to people in these troubled times. If I help only one person to feel better through my music, it was already worth it”.
