When The Black Keys ‘Lonely Boy’ exploded into the summer of 2011 it seemed like a new dawn for Blues-Rock in the mainstream of music. As I write this in the spring of 2016 almost five years later it looks like that dawn was a false one.
But just because it wasn’t quite the breakthrough we thought it might have been doesn’t mean that the genre has gone away. While it’s not hugely popular in this country it is still a major player in North America and after honing their sound over there Vancouver-based The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer are gearing up for another European invasion!
Shawn “Harpoonist” Hall (lead vocals, harmonica) and Matthew “Axe Murderer” Rogers (guitar, drums, backing vocals) combine the old school blues sound of artists like Willie Dixon with a modern rock/pop edge of Jack White and the aforementioned Black Keys, throwing in a hint of soul/gospel influence for good measure.
Their latest single ‘Don’t Make ‘Em Like They Used To’ is a raucous three minutes of dirty guitar and howling harmonica built around a hookline the same as the title, you can almost picture the dingy blues club with everyone dancing into the early hours of the morning. They have been nominated for Blues Album of the Year at the Junos in 2014, for multiple Maple Blues Awards and won Blues Act of the Year at the SiriusXM Indies in 2013. This is their first visit to Europe but they have already built up a considerable live CV playing at SXSW 2013/14, Ottawa Blues Fest, Montreal Jazz Fest and have shared the stage with Taj Mahal, Booker T Jones, David Wilcox and Mother Mother, to name but a few.
The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer’s latest single Don’t Make ‘Em Like They Used To is out on May 6th 2016 via Tonic Records.
