Fanstasma, the South African collective, fronted by Spoek Mathambo and DJ Spoko + Andre Geldenhuys, Bhekisenzo Cele, Mike Buchanan – deliver an enthralling ode to their fascinating homeland, with the video for ‘Eye Of The Sun’, a slice of ravishing “modern South African diversity”, taken from the ‘Eye of The Sun’ EP, out now on Soundway Records.
The video directed by Travys Owen, was shot amongst the breathtaking environs of the Karoo desert. The band explains: “We wanted to make something cinematic; about adventure, exploration, struggle and transcendence which is what both the song and Fantasma are about. All while expressing the supernatural beauty of South Africa.” Director Travys Owen adds: “Eye of the Sun’ was written with strenuous expedition, exploration and transcendence and the resulting magic in things at its core… Over-saturation, subtle animation and surreal colouring create an environment that reacts to the men, while the featuring Moon Child acts as the central magnet, pulling them into her gravitational orbit. It’s an African Western, it’s Science Fiction, the music has been dubbed ‘Township Tech’, it’s Zulu Maskandi grime-punk, but what allows for all of these vastly juxtaposing themes to co-exist is the band itself – A token of modern South African diversity.”
Fanstasma’s debut LP is released early next year.
