Afriquoi’s Quick Fire Questions

London based afrobeat collective Afriquoi draws upbeat, impressionistic afro-house pop on their new single release Acid Attack and headline Oslo in Hackney on 6th December.

What was the first album you bought?

Haha we’re probably showing our ages here a but but our singer Andre Espeut says his was Thriller which makes sense! Percussionist Dre says his was Black Sunday by Cypress Hill

Who are some of your biggest musical inspirations and why?

Frankie knuckles and his innovated approach to popularising house music from his native chicago. Manu dibango with his fusion style mixing jazz, funk, and traditional Cameroonian music, soul makossa was one of his best. And then of course Débruit whose tune Nigeria What was a massive inspiration and was part of the inspiration for the name Afriquoi.  It’s nice to see his new project Kokoko smashing it!

What are some non-musical inspirations that motivate your music?

How we communicate and relate with each other and how we can work together to achieve more, as most of the time music is a collaborative process, its nice to reflect that more in our every day lives as this is inspiring in itself and provides insight and emotional content.

Tell us about your new track Acid Attack.

Acid Attack is our statement against the attacks in London and also a message/analogy about acid type conversations that we can have or avoid with each other, either way there’s no need to engage with people in this way. Basically all you have is how you treat people and that tune for us is a warning that if you don’t treat others with the respect they deserve you will get left out in the cold….

Past ‘Acid Attack’ what can we expect from you for the rest of 2019?

Acid Attack is the first track of our EP which is going to come out on Mawimbi Records in February next year. We’re so excited to be finally showcasing more of a live sound closer to what you will hear us play in the live shows. We’ve got a few nice live shows planned, with Bristol on November 16, Brighton Nov 30 and Oslo, London on December 6. You can  expect to hear exclusive previews in our live shows of new tracks being showcased!
