Review by Keith Bailie
A REAL Boy How Autism Shattered Our Lives, And Made A Family From The Pieces is a heartfelt and honest account by Christopher Stevens about the difficulties of being the parent of a severely autistic child.
Chris and wife Nicola recorded their experience of living with their son David and they have turned it into a moving documentation of their lives.David, in many ways is a normal 11 year old, who enjoys music, school and climbing trees.

But David’s autism means he is unable to speak more than a few words, struggling to convey his most basic needs.

One of David’s biggest problems is his inability to imagine pain or understand danger. He would not understand that getting out of the car while it is moving could cause him severe injuries.

Autism is a thousand times more common now than in the 1950s. The National Autism Society estimates that 1 in 100 children are now born with Autism in the UK. The United Nations have also declared that April 2 is World Autism Day, the first of which took place this year.

Chris and Nicola Stevens, who live in Bristol, approach this deeply personal and difficult subject with tremendous bravery and an honest sense of humour that makes this book both difficult and enjoyable.

The book is out now and retailing at £6.99.
