If you want to stay fit, you might think that joining the gym is the best step you can take. You have access to a range of different equipment and you can even hire a personal trainer to help you plan a routine. But before you start spending loads of money on a membership, why not consider some of the alternatives, like running?

Although you can get fit by going to the gym, running can be a great alternative for a lot of reasons. The obvious benefit is that it’s cheaper, but that is only one of the great reasons to give it a try. Here’s why running can be so much better than the gym.

You Can Do It Anywhere 

When you have to drive to the gym to do your workout, it’s easy to convince yourself that you don’t have time. But you can’t really do that with running because you only have to step outside your front door, which means that you are more likely to keep up with it. It also means that you can maintain your fitness routine even if you are away from home because you can run anywhere. In fact, running in new places is a great way to explore, so as a runner, you’ll have no excuse for skipping your workouts. 

You Don’t Need Expensive Equipment 

A lot of people decide to skip the gym and exercise at home instead, but they still spend a lot of money on specialist equipment. But when you are running, the only thing you need to buy is a good pair of running shoes, like the Adidas Ultra Boost, and you’re good to go. If you invest in a good quality pair of trainers, they will last a long time, meaning even less you need to invest in your workouts. 

It Boosts Your Mental Health 

All forms of exercise are good for reducing stress and cultivating good mental health, but running is better than most. Studies show that getting out into nature has a positive impact on mental health, which is why running outside is so much more beneficial than working out in a gym, staring at a brick wall. Running outside also helps to increase your vitamin D levels through exposure to sunlight. This is so important because vitamin D deficiency, which many of us suffer from, has been linked to poor brain development and mental health issues, like depression. 

It Works Your Whole Body 

You might assume that running just works your legs, but that isn’t the case. Although it does focus on the legs, it also helps to build core strength, engages the muscles in your back and exercises your shoulders. If you’re only looking to build huge biceps, running isn’t the exercise for you. But if you want to build overall strength and maintain a healthy weight, it’s one of the best things you can do. 

So if you want to get fit but you hate the idea of going to the gym, maybe 2021 is the year to take up running. There’s only one way to start – simply put on those running shoes and start putting one foot in front of the other.
