Ruben Pol Talks Us Through His New Single ‘Bedsheets’

We have been listening to Ruben Pol’s softly produced ‘Bedsheets’ non-stop since we first hear it. The Dutch model and producer really captures an atmosphere with this single, and he has more new music on the way. We spoke about the track and more with Ruben in our interview below.

When did you first starting writing music?

I remember the first song I wrote very well. It didn’t have any lyrics, it just consisted of chords and I played it on my moms guitar. I figured out what adding a ‘7’ does to the sound of a chord and created this basic scheme: A7 – D7 – G7 – E – E7. I think I was around 10 years old at the time.

What inspires you on a daily basis?

I listen to music everyday, all day through. That inspires me a lot. And apart from that, a lot of inspiration comes from my thoughts and feelings. Everything that I’m going through, which can be big things and little things.

Where did you grow up? What music were you into from a young age?

I grew up in a town called Alphen aan den Rijn in The Netherlands. I consciously remember playing my moms Anastacia ‘Greatest Hits’ CD in my bed room. I still play Outta Love and Made For Loving’ You from time to time. I was also very into rock, I started listening to bands such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, ACDC and Guns n Roses at young age.

What makes you unique as an artist?

I think this is a hard question to answer about myself. I just feel like I have been waiting my whole life to release my own work. And now that the moment is finally there I can let my creativity flow freely.

Your new single ‘Bedsheets’ is dreamy, congratulations! Can you tell us a little bit about the making of it?

Thank you! I wrote ‘Bedsheets’ in my bedroom in Amsterdam. The first thing I put down were the melodies of the verses and the pre-chorus. Soon after that, I created a beat for the chorus which immediately lead to the vocal chop. For the vocal chop I just cut a vocal track of mine into many pieces and basically glued it together in a different order. After that it was just fine tuning. The bridge was the last thing that I created. The extra melody suddenly popped into my head and the words were there right away. The words in the bridge mean a lot to me.

How have reactions been to it so far?

Unbelievably good. It is so unreal for me that people actually listen to the track I wrote in my bed room. I have received an insane amount of sweet messages and videos from people listening to it in all kinds of places.

What do you have coming up next?

I have written a lot of music and I keep writing more on (at least) a weekly basis. It depends on how busy I am with my job as a fashion model. New music will be released soon (!!) and I have a lot of ideas for things such as videos and combining my music even more with my work in fashion. I truly can’t wait to show what more I’ve been working on.

What have been your summer highlights so far? What are you looking forward to coming up?

Releasing ‘Bedsheets’ definitely was the biggest highlight of my summer so far. I asked my friends to come over for drinks that night, which was so much fun! Furthermore I am happiest when I work a lot. I love to go to the studio, create content and travel. I gives me a lot of positive energy. So for that reason, I’m not planning to leave for a big vacation or anything like that. I’m extremely excited to release more music, that is what I’m looking forward to the most.
