AILBHE REDDY SHARES ‘RELENT’

Following the release of her outstanding self-released debut EP ‘Hollowed Out Sea’, Dublin indie-folk singer-songwriter Ailbhe Reddy, returns and shines again with a new complexly enchanting and intense tune, untitled ‘Relent’. Don’t miss her debut UK show at the Servant Jazz Quarters in London on 15th February.

Hello Ailbhe!…Tell us about the new single ‘Relent’:

‘Relent’ was the result of the natural retrospection that occurs in the aftermath of a break up. I went through a break up last year which I never really processed at the time and was only hit hard by feelings of guilt much later. I really wanted to portray another side to the story, show my own shortcomings and be really honest about how you can let things close to you fall apart. The song is primarily an attempt at honestly articulating this.

Which other bands/artists have influenced you?

I grew up listening to Jeff Buckley, Simon & Garfunkel, Queen and Don McLean. So I have always looked at songwriters and lyrics as being first and foremost. Now I am massively influenced by Fiona Apple, Villagers, Amy Winehouse, Ane Brun, Kate Bush, The Shins and Iron and Wine. Favourite album and why?

That’s a really hard question! I think currently my favourite album is ‘When the Pawn…’ by Fiona Apple. Its an album I can listen through again and again and always discover more. A few of the tracks have really shaped how I write lyrics, I really aspire to write with the honesty that Apple does. Also the way she uses percussion in her music is really interesting and diverse.

If you could duet with any artist dead or alive who would it be and why?

Can I answer with Fiona Apple again?
I’d also love to duet with Johnny Cash or Lianne la Havas.

Your debut EP has had over a million streams, which is a lot! how did you achieve this and how does it feel knowing your music has reached that many people?

I don’t think there is a greater feeling as an artist than knowing that people are listening to, appreciating and identifying with your music. Its absolutely incredible, I feel so lucky. My songs were picked by Spotify playlist curators for use, so I am grateful to them for their dedication to finding new music.

What can we expect from your debut UK show?

If you listen to and like my music I think it will be a really lovely show, Servant Jazz Quarters is a really intimate setting so I think it will be really special.

Finally what else do you have planned for 2017?

I’ll be releasing more material and playing festivals
