R SPACE GALLERY PRESENTS: JOHN D’ARCY ‘CLOSE YOUR EYES AND READ’…”IMMERSIVE DIGITAL EXPERIENCE OF POETRY, SONG AND VIDEO”

john darcy2RSpace Gallery presents: ‘Close Your Eyes and Read’, a new installation by Lisburn based multimedia artist John D’Arcy ‘Close Your Eyes and Read’, one evening of immersive digital experience of poetry, song and video. (Friday 7th March. 7pm – 9pm)

The work follows on from D’Arcy’s recent experiments with verbal art forms, typographic media and experimental engagement with audiences. Nontraditional storytelling in sound and video actively plays with the viewer’s reading and listening through time as they navigate their electronic consciousness.
john darcyWhat inspired you to create Close Your Eyes and Read?

I wanted to create the experience of being immersed in a moving digital poem. Having recently seen some great video art with multiple screens surrounding the viewer, I thought this would be an interesting way to explore the acts of reading and listening – how the eyes and the ears can work in tandem to piece together a narrative.

Close Your Eyes and Read…why should we be there?

The Friday evening show is R-Space is the only chance to experience this work in an event open to the public.

What is your favorite thing to see during your experimental engagement with audiences?

A mixture of people reacting exactly how I had hoped and how I never would have imagined.

What distracts you while you’re performing?

Anything that is unexpected could be considered to be a distraction. If something like this is beginning to affect the performance then maybe it can be used to divert things in a new direction. Sometimes it’s hard to let go of the plan – the initial ideas you have for a performance. But playfulness and improvisation are really important too.

What are your fondest musical memories in your house?

Trying to translate the Beatles into Spanish over breakfast, unwrapping Christmas presents to the choral music from Home Alone, and lip-syncing for Snapchat.

Who are your influences in the music and art world?

I really admire artists who create new ways for audiences experience music and other art forms, particularly people like David Byrne and Brian Eno who blur the lines between conceptual art and popular music.

Do you get nervous before a performance or installation like Close Your Eyes and Read?

I have never created anything quite like Close You Eyes and Read so I’ve yet to find out.

What’s coming next for you?

I’ll be showing some more installations in Belfast over the next few months, and returning to the Happy Days International Beckett Festival in Enniskillen this Summer.
