Future Kwaai diva Umlilo in association with FAMEMAGAZINE.co.uk has collaborated with filmmaker and visual artist ma – mo in creating the visually rich lyric video for his cover of Bob Dylan’s ‘In My Time Of Dying’. The video comes hot on the heels of Umlilo’s third single ‘Out of My face’, taken from his strong debut EP, ‘Shades of Kwaai’.
With this video produced by FAMEMAGAZINE, ma-mo and has captured the dark and haunting feeling in Umlilo’s take on Bob Dylan’s classic song.
Avant-garde Cape Town singer/producer and performance artist Umlilo, was inspired by certain elements of the song when he decided to record it as an intro to his EP: “I am very inspired by gospel music and what they used to call “negroe spirituals” back in the day and when I first heard Bob Dylan’s song, it really struck a chord for me because it was layered with so much meaning.
I wanted to re-create the song in my own style and give it a future kwaai twist.” “The interesting thing about the song is death. I’ve always been fascinated with death, we are always surrounded by death and we are all ultimately going to die but the song is re-assuring because death can also mean rebirth, re-incarnation and for me, that meaning resonated very well with where I am at as an artist.
I had to kill part of myself to re-incarnate into something new and fresh.”
‘Shades of Kwaai’ was was mixed by Ross Dorkin (bassist for Beatenberg) adding Umlilo’s signature sound dubbed ‘future kwaai’.
