CASSETTE STORE DAY: “MUSIC SOUNDS GREAT ON CASSETTE”
International Cassette Store Day 2013 is a celebration of a physical product that is accessible, fun, cheap and still going strong in the turbulent current musical climate.
No longer the inadequate, younger sibling of Vinyl and CD, the humble Cassette has been making a resurgence of late.
Bobby Gillespie says: “Music sounds great on cassette I have a big collection of original albums on cassette from artists like Dylan , The Rolling Stones, The Byrds, MC5 & Suicide.
I also have great compilation tapes I made to play on Primal Scream tours. Cassette is a cool medium to listen to music on.
Warm and fat. Good bottom end. Yeah! X”
This event sees limited releases from it’s organisers – SEXBEAT (Fucked Up), Kissability (Los Campesinos!) and Suplex Cassettes (Fair Ohs, Proper Ornaments); as well as classic albums reissued in this fun format by Transgressive (At The Drive-In, Pulled Apart By Horses), Bella Union (The Flaming Lips), Domino (The Pastels), 4AD (Deerhunter), Wichita Recordings (Hard Skin), Burger Records and many more.
Other labels involved spreading the Cassette love with limited releases are Night School, Jade Tree, Mirror Universe, Reeks of Effort, Art is Hard, Faux Discx, Tye Die Tapes.
Similar events are taking place in record stores in Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo and…Australia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, France, Italy, Spain and Germany.
