COCOROSIE SHARE CONTROVERSIAL VIDEO FOR ‘CHILD BRIDE’

COCOROSIECocoRosie have unveiled a strong video for the splendid track ‘Child Bride’, taken from their amazing new album ‘Tales of a GrassWidow’ through City Slang (out now).

The ‘Child Bride’ video comes alongside CocoRosie sister Bianca Cassidy’s involvement in Girls Against God, a boldly feminist exploration and multi-generational arts & letters publication, deploying the arts to illuminate the oppressive, obsolete nature of traditional, male-defined religions and other patriarchal institutions — “We must resist and reinvent,” Casady declares.child_bride_john_brawley In the video, directed by Emma Freeman, the motions of Girls Against God are illustrated to poignant effect.

“Child Bride is my forth music video for CocoRosie” Freeman explains, “A tale of a young girl who is married to an older man and removed from her family. Through a window in her husband’s home, she dreams of being back with them. Do they still think about her? Lonely, abandoned and made to be a wife and woman.

She adds: “Every year, an estimated 14 million girls are married before they turn 18. Robbed of their childhood, denied their rights to health, education and security. I encourage people to get involved and visit girlsnotbrides.org.”

The songs in ‘Tales of a Grass Widow,’ touch on CocoRosie’s personal response to the group’s feminist mission – ‘Grass widow’ itself is an archaic term meaning an abandoned mistress and sets the scene for an album full of unsettling turmoil and contrasting stark beauty.

“We are burning with optimism,” Bianca asserts. “I feel a global awakening to the realization that we have been comfortable in a social prison for thousands of years. We, women and men, oppressed by patriarchal views and systems with religions who despise women.

“You can find the phrase “Eve The Whore” in almost every western language. It rolls off the tongue without a second thought, without acknowledging how Religions have blamed women and their bodies and their sex on the fall of “man”.”
