Osbourne’s re-emergence as a reality TV star seemed to halt any chance of a reunion though. But in the world or rock anything can happen.
Which is why this brand new studio album (called 13) is all the more exciting and welcomed. The news that it has topped the album charts this week is even better as well.
Of course the news that guitarist Tony Iommi was valiantly battling cancer during the recording and beyond, made the event all the more special too.
Even without drummer Bill Ward the finished product here is a wonderful addition to the official Black Sabbath canon. With ’13′ the band have returned to their classic (rock/metal) sound in many ways, albeit with a few modern twists and turns too. It may not be exactly what we remember, but it is not too far off.
In fact the album as a whole may just be one of the best the group have ever produced (in my opinion), especially when you factor in the output they have had over the years, in other incarnations.
The reason I say that is that in this day and age the band know their limitations and their abilities. Ozzy for one may have lost some of his vocal range, but he adapts his style now and really delivers here with each song. Iommi is as always on form and we would expect nothing less, and Geezer Butler has not lost any of his vigour either. Yes we do miss Bill Ward, but three quarters of the original band is far better than none of them.
In a recent interview with Classic Rock Magazine Osbourne said ‘Tony has always been the leader (of Black Sabbath). Because without his riffs we would not have had a fucking chance in hell of doing anything. He comes up with stuff and I have to work around it.’
’13′ has done something wonderful for rock/metal fans across the globe, it has given us hope that even our wildest dreams can come true. To hear Black Sabbath with Ozzy on vocals once again is an unbelievable treat and the knowledge that the band are also on tour make it all the more special too.
I for one cannot wait to see the band take to the stage later this year and hope we get a few more releases from them down the line as well.
Black Sabbath ’13′ is available now from all good retailers.
