The team here at Fame love success stories and we also love to be in the position to help boost an acts profile to the next level if we can.
But one thing we have never done (to date) is be able to chat to a fast-rising act about what a new found level of fame does to them. Cue dance artist Beth Sherburn, who has been worrying many long established acts in the music charts recently.
What is even more impressive is that not so long ago this dynamic diva was eking out a life behind the perfume counter at Debenhams.Hi Beth. So lets kick off with the big question. How did you get from a perfume counter, to overtaking so many established bands in the music charts?
Hi guys! It’s all down to luck!! Pure and simple I was simply at the right place at the right time! Hard work is another key factor; the two go hand in hand in this profession..
How did you get in to the music industry, have you any inspiring stories for any aspiring musicians reading?
From an early age music has always been my passion! I joined my school choir which built my confidence immensely, leading me to take singing and piano lessons. I entered lots of competitions nationwide and joined a gospel choir.
With them I got the opportunity to sing at a number of world class venues, including The Royal Albert Hall, Birmingham NIA, MEN arena to name but a few. I got involved in many workshops, inspiring me and helping me to develop my songwriting skills! Can you explain to our readers the process you use when creating a new song?
Everyone is different when it comes to songwriting. I generally have a lyric with a melody that suddenly appears in my head! (This is why i always have a dictaphone in my bag.) The piano helps me to structure the song and then I develop my ideas when I am in the studio.
All my songs are based on life experiences; whether this is my own experiences, friends, relationships or good nights out! May we ask you what artists inspire you musically. Have you a dream collaboration you hope may happen?
There are many artists over the years that have influenced me musically, when I was younger my parents used to listen to Dusty Springfield and Carole King, the latter of which was my initial inspiration to write songs.
I then fell in love with the divas of the music industry such as Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston all the way through to current icons like Britney Spears, Beyonce and Rihanna.
I’d love to collaborate with Calvin Harris and Will.I.Am! They have definitely taken the pop/dance world by storm!! If you had to describe your work to our readers in ten words what would they be?
My music is “edgy, has a pop/dance sound with attitude and flare!”
Your single ‘Ordinary World’ has been receiving huge acclaim to date. Have you a follow up track in the works?
Have you any plans to tour this single and its follow-ups? I have previously been touring schools in the UK! And recently been performing in clubs and on live radio!! Everyone has been really supportive and are anticipating my future release!
Your success story is one that many will be astounded to hear. Have you any advice for musicians out there who work so hard to be spotted by an agent or manager?
NEVER GIVE UP! Always give 110%. You never know who’s watching or listening to give you that big break you deserve! You may get knock backs but always stay positive. I believe that if you put in the hard work from the beginning you will get rewarded one day!!!
Beth are there any hobbies or interests you enjoy that you wish to share with our readers?
Other than singing and songwriting I enjoy performing in many ways. I attend Pineapple Dance Studios, which is so much fun and a great way to keep fit!
I like going to open mic nights with friends and going to gigs to see the upcoming talent; which i think is important for any musician as I feel it provides inspiration. I also love to travel, go shopping, play netball and go to the movies.
Finally, can we ask you where we will see yourself in five years time.
