Matt Cardle says he’s put his stint on X Factor behind him as he releases his debut album ‘Letters’. Here’s our quick Q&A:
Matt you won the X Factor in 2010, how has your life changed since then?
DRAMATICALLY. ALTHOUGH I HAD ALWAYS BEEN WRITING AND RECORDING, WINNING THE X FACTOR LAST YEAR HAS OFFERED ME THE OPPORTUNITY OF COLLABORATING WITH SOME FANTASTIC TALENT.
You of course topped the charts with your debut song ‘When We Collide’ how did that feel, was it a dream come true?
IT FELT GREAT. IF I’M HONEST, THE REAL DREAM IS TO HAVE ONE OF MY SONGS AT THE TOP OF THE CHARTS. WE WILL SEE IN TIME WHETHER OR NOT THAT HAPPENS BUT IT WAS A GREAT FEELING TO HAVE A CHRISTMAS NUMBER 1, AFTER AN ALREADY AMAZING EXPERIENCE ON THE SHOW.
What has life been like since you won the X Factor and what have you been doing in the past year?
LIFE HAS BEEN BRILLIANT. I STARTED OFF THE YEAR ON THE X FACTOR TOUR, THEN WAS STRAIGHT INTO THE STUDIO WHERE I’VE BEEN FOR THE LAST 5 MONTHS WRITING AND RECORDING MY DEBUT ALBUM WHICH HAS BEEN AN INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE, WORKING WITH SO MANY TALENTED SONGWRITERS AND PRODUCERS LIKE EG WHITE, JAMES WALSH (STARSAILOR) AND SO MANY MORE.
You are about to release your first album ‘Letters’, what can we expect from that in terms of style and sound?
IT’S ACTUALLY THE KIND OF MUSIC I’VE ALWAYS BEEN WRITING. THERE ARE SOME REALLY SOULFUL TRACKS, ACOUSTIC TRACKS, ROCK TRACKS, A BIT OF EVERYTHING, BUT AT IT’S CORE, THE MAIN CRITERIA IN MY MIND WHEN I EMBARKED ON CREATING THIS ALBUM WAS TO JUST WRITE THE BEST SONGS I COULD – SO THERE ARE DIFFERENT DYNAMICS. SOME OF THE TRACKS ARE SO STRIPPED BACK AND OTHERS ARE PRETTY HIGH ENERGY AND WILL BE GREAT TO SING LIVE.We hear you co-wrote tracks on the album, what was that process like?
WELL I’M REALLY PLEASED THAT ULTIMATELY 11 OUT OF THE 13 TRACKS ON THE ALBUM ARE CO-WRITES AND SO I HAD A PRETTY DOMINANT HAND IN THEIR CREATION. THE PROCESS WAS SOMETIMES SURREAL BECAUSE I WOULD GO INTO THE STUDIO WITH SOMEONE LIKE EG WHITE, WHO HAS WRITTEN FOR THE LIKES OF JAMES MORRISON AND ADELE AND LITERALLY HAVE TO SPILL MY HEART OUT WITHIN THE FIRST FEW HOURS OF MEETING HIM, IN ORDER FOR US TO CONNECT WITH A SUBJECT MATTER AND COME OUT OF THERE WITH SOMETHING HEARTFELT AND REAL TO ME.
We hear that you will be touring your new album kicking off with a regional tour, where and when can fans see you in London?
YES, WELL I’VE GOT SOME DATES IN SCOTLAND FOR THE END OF SEPTEMBER. I REALLY WANTED TO GET OUT THERE AND PLAY THE ALBUM AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND THOUGHT IT WOULD BE COOL TO GO TO SOME PLACES A LITTLE OFF THE BEATEN TRACK AND I GUESS A LITTLE LESS OBVIOUS. I CAN’T WAIT TO PERFORM IN LONDON AND WE WILL BE ANNOUNCING SOMETHING VERY SOON, BUT I CANT SAY ANYTHING JUST YET.
What’s next for Matt Cardle in terms of writing/performing, have you any collaborations you would love to see happen?
WELL THE NEXT FEW MONTHS WILL BE ALL ABOUT PERFORMING LIVE FOR ME, NOW THAT I’VE FINISHED WRITING THE ALBUM. I’VE JUST PUT MY BAND TOGETHER WHICH IS AWESOME… WE’VE GOT SOME REALLY GREAT PLAYERS. I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO PUTTING TOGETHER THE BEST LIVE SHOW I CAN., IT’S SO IMPORTANT TO ME TO GET OUT THERE AND PLAY!
Have you been watching this years X Factor, what do you think of the new judges?
TO BE HONEST, I’VE BEEN SO BUSY FINISHING MY ALBUM AND PUTTING MY BAND TOGETHER THAT I HAVEN’T HAD A CHANCE TO SEE MUCH, BUT I AM GONNA TRY AND CATCH UP, I HEAR THE PANEL IS PRETTY COOL AND THAT THERE HAVE ALREADY BEEN SOME GREAT CONTESTANTS THIS YEAR.
We hear Gary Barlow wrote your upcoming single release ‘Run For Your Life’, how did you find working with the Take That legend?
THIS WAS THE LAST TRACK WE RECORDED FOR THE ALBUM. WE PRETTY MUCH HAD THE WHOLE THING DONE AND THEN CHRIS BRIGGS, MY A&R GUY, PLAYED ME THIS SONG.
GARY HAD WRITTEN IT A FEW YEARS AGO AND FOR SOME REASON, HADN’T DONE ANYTHING WITH IT. HE THOUGHT IT WOULD BE GREAT FOR ME, AND WHEN I HEARD IT I LOVED IT. THE LYRICS REALLY GRABBED ME AS IT IS THE KIND OF SONG LYRICALLY I HAD BEEN TRYING TO WRITE FOR AGES. THE SONG TALKS ABOUT BEING IN A RELATIONSHIP AND YOU’RE TELLING YOUR PARTNER YOU BASICALLY AREN’T GOOD ENOUGH FOR THEM AND THAT THEY SHOULD MOVE ON. I FEEL THE SONG DOES THAT IN SUCH A CLEVER WAY, AVOIDING ALL THE USUAL CLICHES. I GOT PRETTY EMOTIONAL IN THE VOCAL BOOTH SINGING IT ACTUALLY. I WAS PLEASED THAT GARY ALLOWED ME TO MAKE A FEW CHANGES TO THE TRACK TOO SO IT SUITED ME A LITTE MORE AND I’M GRATEFUL FOR THAT.
Thanks for your time Matt, one last question can we ask what music you enjoy listening to?
I’M A BIG RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE FAN. I’VE ALSO ALWAYS LOVED NIRVANA, PEARL JAM, PETER GABRIEL AND DAVE MATTHEWS BAND TOO. ALANIS MORISSETTE IS AMAZING AND I’VE ACTUALLY BEEN GETTING INTO JOHN MAYER LATELY. mattcardlemusic.com
