Caro Emerald and her smoldering vocals has seen her stock rise with astonishing speed since Back It Up first made waves back home a little over a year ago.Since the Dutch release of Deleted Scenes From The Cutting Room Floor in January, she has spent over 6 months on top of the album chart, and is currently certified triple platinum.
A new signing to Dramatico Records in the UK, Caro and her accessible, dancefloor-inspired music are now in hot demand all across Europe.
WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU MAKE / PLAY?
I think you can best describe it as beats mixed with 40’s/50’s jazz.
WHERE ARE YOU FROM? Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
HOW DID YOU START AND WHEN?
Oh, I’ve been singing almost all my life! I discovered my voice when I was just 11 years old, and ever since I’ve been a real singing fanatic. My album Deleted Scenes From the Cutting Room Floor was created when in 2007 I met a few wonderful Dutch producers that I musically connected with and together we took time to create these songs based on this sound.
WHO ARE YOUR INFLUENCES IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY?
Oh, there are lots of them! It’s a huge range, everyone from Michael Jackson and Mariah Carey to Billie Holiday and the Andrews Sisters. Amy Winehouse, Otis Redding, Jamie Lidell, Beyonce, Lauryn Hill, Etta James, Fats Waller, Andrew Sisters, Aretha Franklin… should I go on? For this album in particular we listened a lot to the famous bigbands like Gene Krupa, Count Basie, Cab Calloway.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE HARDEST PART OF BEING IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY FOR YOU?
I guess the ‘monkey effect’.
When you’re famous, people tend to stare at you like you’re a happening in a zoo or something! 🙂
TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR EARLY DAYS AND HOW THEY DIFFER FROM NOW?
Ooh, my life just couldn’t be any more different! I used to be working as a freelance singer and vocal coach, doing all kinds of projects. I did perform on stage fairly often, but definitely not as much as I do now! My schedule is fully booked, I’m traveling a lot and I’m doing stuff that I used to only dream of!
WHAT WAS THE LAST GIG YOU PLAYED, WHAT DID YOUTHINK OF IT?
The last gig was a showcase in Rome. It was the very first gig my band and I did in Italy, and it was amazing! I was surprised about the response, it was quite overwhelming!
HAVE YOU ANY FORTHCOMING GIGS IN IRELAND OR NORTHERN IRELAND? IF SO ARE YOU LOOKING FOR WARD TO THEM AND WHY ?
I haven’t got any dates yet, but my team is working on it, so I’ll keep you informed! I’m definitely looking forward to visiting Ireland, Irish people are great party people and have a great sense of humour, of course 🙂
WHAT’S THE MOST SUCCESSFUL THING YOU GUYS HAVE DONE TO DATE?
We broke Michael Jackson’s record of longest noted #1 album, 28 weeks!
WHO HAS HELPED YOU THE MOST GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?
I know it’s a very cheesy answer, but: the fans obviously! Without them, all of this just wouldn’t have happened.
WHAT’S COMING NEXT FOR YOU?
Releasing the single and album all over Europe! Right now I’m traveling to countries like Italy, UK and Poland for promotion.
IS IT HARD BEING A NEW ARTIST IN TODAY’S INDUSTRY?
Well I guess it should be, but I haven’t really noticed, to be honest! I guess I’m a lucky girl!
HOW IMPORTANT IS THE INTERNET AND SOCIAL NETWORK SITES FOR YOUR SUCCESS?
It is the world! Without that I would’ve definitely not come this far! We started our own label Grandmono to release this album, so we did
it completely on our own, without a lot of money. That has only been possible through the power of internet.
WHO WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO COLLABORATE WITH IN THE INDUSTRY?
Well, a duet with Louis Armstrong would be great, but unfortunately that’s probably not possible…
