Last year, Xmas sales records were blown to smithereens by the blockbuster action game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which generated over $1billion in worldwide revenue during its nine weeks at the top of the Xmas charts. Who will take this year’s crown is much debated and industry insiders are tipping the several major franchise returns, as well as some newcomers, for the 2010 top slot.
Bookmakers, William Hill, currently have FIFA 11 from Electronic Arts as the odds-on favourite to top the Xmas All Formats chart.
This is echoed by a panel of gaming experts for GamesIndustry.biz, who expect the Xmas top five to look like this, though say it’s too early to rule out surprises:
1) FIFA 11 (Electronic Arts) – William Hill ‘Xmas # 1’ odds: 1/1
2) Call of Duty: Black Ops (Activision Blizzard) – William Hill ‘Xmas # 1’ odds: 5/2
3) Wii Party (Nintendo) – William Hill ‘Xmas # 1’ odds: 5/1
4) Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood (Ubisoft) – William Hill ‘Xmas # 1’ odds: 6/1
5) Just Dance 2 (Ubisoft) – William Hill ‘Xmas # 1’ odds: 8/1
Phil Elliot, Publisher for GamesIndustry.biz, said: “It’s no wonder there’s so much speculation on what will be this year’s number one game.
Even the combined revenues of last year’s number one DVD and music single, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Rage Against the Machine’s Killing in the Name Of, pale into insignificance against Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II’s reported GBP67.4million of sales in its first week alone.”
On 1st October the London Games Festival kicks off with the Eurogamer Expo in Earl’s court: three days of unlimited access to games before they release this Xmas.
Kirsty Payne, Director of London Games Festival said: “The Eurogamer Expo marks the start of a month-long celebration of gaming in the Capital.”
Rupert Loman, Managing Director at Eurogamer said: “The three-day Eurogamer Expo at Earls Court has all the big game releases under one roof. Loads of the top games coming out this Christmas will be playable, so let’s see if the UK’s gamers agree with the experts on what will be number one.”
