THE Trinity Lodge came alive last weekend with bands and singers for the dress rehearsal of the Battle Of The Bands and Search For A Rock Diva competition which starts this week.
Straight on the back of a successful X-Factor style competition called The T-Factor which seen the club packed to capacity for 16 weeks suicide awareness and prevention charity PIPS Programmes are back again.
Having raised a five-figure sum during the T-Factor fundraising manager Jay Cartmill said he’s hoping to repeat the success with the latest talent competition.
He added: “The T-Factor was such a success that we wanted to give young people and adults the opportunity to show us what they’ve got once again.
“We have bands and potential diva stars traveling from all over Belfast this time and have lined up a whole host of exciting judges and mentors.
“This week we are having a classic rock theme which will see our bands and divas all belting out classics from bands such as Kiss, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard and much much more.
“I know many people were worried that this would be all loud heavy metal music, but I can guarantee you it isn’t. Last week we had acts sing songs from Pink and Duffy as well as a rendition of the hit song 99 Red Balloons.â€
Judges at the Battle Of The Bands include former Citybeat radio star and TV presenter Robin Elliott, showbiz reporter and artist manager Tina Calder and lead vocalist with girlgroup Voodoo Kat O’Reilly.
This week they will be joined by Marty McStravick, a Belfast rocker who is the lead singer in the Kiss tribute band Hotter Than Hell.
Also mentoring the acts are singing and music coach and Westend star Pauline Carville and guitar tutor, technician and musician Mikk Legge.
Hosted by Jay and his glamorous assistant Lady Portia Diamonte this week’s event will see 16 acts take to the stage throughout the three hour show.
Judge Robin said: “I was a judge at the T-Factor and I was absolutely stunned by the quality of talent coming through. Now already after a dress rehearsal I’m really looking forward to seeing what we have in store over the next eight weeks.â€
Kat added: “It’s great to see people traveling from all over to participate and support the other acts. Just watch this space because Battle Of The Bands 2010 is gonna be huge.â€
The competition has also added a unique twist to voting and is giving fans and supporters of each act the chance to help them stay in the competition.
Tina said: “We decided we wanted to have a lot more audience interaction with the voting system but we didn’t want to turn it into a popularity competition like so many of these talent shows.
“Therefore we introduced the ability for people to vote for their favourite act to gain immunity from being kicked out of the competition throughout the competition up until the finals.
“All you have to do is text your vote and while you support your act you are also supporting the PIPS charity as 26p from every vote goes to the charity and each person who votes is added to a prize draw to be drawn at the final.â€
To vote for your favourite act simply text their “Star†code to 88008. Texts cost 50p plus your standard network charge. 26p goes to PIPS.
