Seniors’ groups from across Belfast are being invited to enjoy one of cinema’s golden oldies as part of the city’s annual Waste Week (Tuesday 1 – Saturday 5 June).
Billy Wilder’s hit movie, ‘Some Like It Hot’, starring screen siren Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon, is having a one-off matinee screening at Dublin Road Movie House on Friday 4 June at 2pm.
And, what’s more, it won’t cost you a penny. All you need to claim your seat is an empty glass jar – but you’ll need to turn up early as the limited tickets are expected to go like hotcakes.
Councillor Pat McCarthy chairman of Belfast City Council’s Health and Environmental Services Committee said: “Last year’s ‘Movies with Glass’ event proved a real success and was a great way of raising awareness about the importance of recycling glass, as well as showing some great cinema classics.
“This year we’re encouraging older people’s groups to take a trip down memory lane with this classic comedy caper, and also to find out how they can recycle at home and help drive up Belfast’s recycling rates.
“Some older folk might remember that during the Second World War, glass was in high demand and so you were able to get in to see the latest picture by bringing an empty jam jar. So we thought as part of Waste Week we’d recycle that old idea, and recycle one of cinema’s most-loved comedies too.â€
Hugh Brown, General Manager at Movie House Cinemas Ltd., said the group was delighted to be able to take part in such an innovative Waste Week event.
Mr Brown said: “This is a tremendous idea. Recycling is an issue that has had to be taken very seriously for some time now and we’re very happy to see our facilities used for such a worthwhile event.â€
Glass is just one waste material that households can recycle and Belfast City Council is encouraging everyone to make that extra push to divert more waste away from landfill.
Throughout Waste Week (1 – 5 June) there are a number of events organised around the council’s ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’ theme.
