The Urban Rock Of Marc Mays – Exclusive Interview

Marc Mays, A.K.A. Marcus Orealius, started out on the same path as many of the other artist’s in his family by singing in his local church choir. Marc has ‘come up’ through the clubs performing from Michigan to Texas and Florida to New York.

"Urban Rock" by Marc Mays

While many people call music entertainment, Mays considers it his existence, and the only really reason he is ‘allowed to be’.

Marc explains, “I need melodies the way we must breathe. Sometimes we’re gasping and other times a good slow, deep lungful brings good health. My songs are the stories of my life, some facts and some fictions or metaphors.” “It is my blessing to share them in God’s love.”

WHO ARE THE BAND MEMBERS AND WHAT DO EACH OF YOU DO IN THE BAND?

It’s much like a Trent Reznor & NIN situation. Robert Reives is the producer, song writer & man behind the sound while the virtuoso lead singer, song writer & guitar virtuoso is Marc Mays. The other live players are interchangeable.

WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU MAKE / PLAY ?
We like to call the sexy cool musical vibes that we are making “Urban Rock” which is a mixture of Rock, Hip Hop & R&B with a few other ingredients thrown in for good measure.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM ?
Robert Reives is from Charlotte, North Carolina but he also spent over 7 years in New York working with some of the music industry heavy hitters & trend setters like Timbaland. Marc Mays is from New York which is where the two of them 1st met but they both set up shop in South Beach Miami, Florida where they now call their musical home.

HOW DID YOU GUYS GET TOGETHER AND WHEN?
While Robert Reives was in New York working on both the Ginuwine & Aaliyah albums Marc was friends with the owner of the studio where Robert was working so the owner suggested that they hang & they became drinking buddies. They didn’t officially start working together until around 2005 when they linked back up in Miami.

WHO ARE YOUR INFLUENCES IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY ?
James Brown, Spiderman, Superman, Batman, Radiohead, Prince, Massive Attack, Bjork, Led Zepplin, PortisHead, Rolling Stones, 2pac & Biggie, Porn, the internet, Lil’ Wayne, Jay Electronica. Madonna, Michael Jackson, Foo Fighters, Queen, Detones, Hall & Oates, NFL, NBA, ACC, ESPN, along with our mother’s & Fathers & friends. Shall I go on? Because we as a creative collective are influenced by everything & anything around us which is what any artist should strive for.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE HARDEST PART OF BEING IN THE BAND FOR YOU ?
Finding room in our Protools to hold all the songs. That’s about it. We have hundreds of songs & not just songs but hits or quality songs just waiting to be unleashed on the world. We like to call it the Vault of Sounds.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR EARLY DAYS AND HOW THEY DIFFER FROM NOW ?
For myself Robert Reives my early days are different in the respect that I came in the game dealing with the major labels & major artist like Jodeci. Dealing thru a major label is a lot different than doing the indie thing the way we are doing it now thru our company SGM7.com aka SolutionsGlobalMedia but it will be more rewarding in the long run. For me Marc Mays, being on the road so much in my early career is now a lot different because the game has changed so much. With the internet you don’t have to get in a van with a bunch of dudes for 6 months to get your music out to the people. There are so many ways now to get the music out as well as make money off of your music like, TV shows, movies or movie soundtracks among other things. The people have a much bigger say so in your success which is the way it really should do, wouldn’t you agree?

WHAT WAS THE LAST GIG YOU PLAYED, WHAT DID YOU THINK OF IT ?
Marc just played recently here in South Beach Miami at the Living Room for an artist show case for the dj for G Unit & Shadyville records Dj Epps. It was a mostly Hip Hop crowd but they got right into the Urban Rock vibes that we were sending out. They loved the live guitar over the dj spinning beats so we got mad love in return while on the stage as well as after when we were just walking around thru all the Honeys, Drunks & Hip Hop Heads. It was a really cool night. Shouts out to Dj Epps & the night owls of South Beach.

HAVE YOU ANY FORTHCOMING GIGS IN IRELAND OR NORTHERN IRELAND ? IF SO ARE YOU LOOKING FOR WARD TO THEM AND WHY ?

Why, is that an open invite from you? But nah, not at the moment but we do look forward to playing Ireland or Northen so please do hit us up anytime & let’s try and make something happen. Until then just keep listen to & bangin’ our Urban Rock musical heat thru the net from SGM7.com or www.myspace.com/marcmays

DO ANY OF THE BAND HAVE ANY IRISH OR NORTHERN IRISH CONNECTIONS ? IF SO TELL US ABOUT THEM ?
Robert Reives is really close friends with a night life club owner big dawg around here named Gerry Kelly who is Irish to the core. He owns a new hot spot type club that we should be playing soon called Mi6 but in roman numerials. It’s a crazy place. Mr. Kelly has done a great job with such a huge space but still keeping it classy.

WHAT’S THE MOST SUCCESSFUL THING YOU GUYS HAVE DONE TO DATE ?
from me Robert Reives as a producer I would have to say we have done a lot of things but to have getting our team of people together that believes in the music & are behind us along with completing the album Robert Reives & Sammy Q presents Urban Rock: Infamous with all the art work & everything is the highlight for us. I know a lot of music is going thru the net right about now which I’m not hating on that but to have a hard copy of the cd in our hands is a very gratifying feeling. You should cop one or two for you and yours thru our web site SGM7.com to see if I am telling you the truth or not. I Dare you!

WHO HAS HELPED YOU THE MOST GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY ?

I would have to say it has been the backing of people like Sammy Q, Matt & the 30Seven Partners team both out of New York as well as our PR mastermind Jennifer Allison along with our friends & fans. They have all been so wonderful to us & for us.

WHAT’S COMING NEXT FOR THE BAND ?
We look forward to doing some major things in the coming months. Movie soundtrack work, more music sneaking out to you & yours thru the net so you can get your quick fix along with a few other surprises thrown in just to keep you on your toes so please do stay tune to the Robert Reives, Marc Mays & the Urban Rock sound.

IS IT HARD BEING A NEW BAND IN TODAY’S INDUSTRY ?
From Robert Reives: From my perspective it’s so easy being in a band these days due to technology & the net. It’s a lot easier to reach out to cool magazines like yours among other as well as get the music we create directly to the fans so their voice can be heard as well as ours. Youtube & all the social networking sites have made my job as a producer so much easier so keep doing what you guys are doing. As far as being in a band & working with a band member like Marc it’s been a dream come true for me because we have such great musical chemistry. It’s crazy how we make this music happen. I’m sure yall would love to watch it because it truly is Magic happening right in front of you. It’s not like work at all. It’s like breathing, it just seems to come natural.

HOW IMPORTANT IS THE INTERNET AND SOCIAL NETWORK SITES TO THE SUCCESS OF YOUR BAND ?

Like I was just saying I feel that the internet & social networking sites is everything. There is nothing like hearing the positive feedback from people you don’t know & that don’t know or shouldn’t even give an F about you. You see that people love your music all over the world with just a click of a few buttons without the manipulation of a major record label or corporate machine working it’s Black magic to cloud the few of the fans, ya’ dig.

WHO WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO COLLABORATE WITH IN THE INDUSTRY ?

Wow! Great question. Thom York & Radiohead, 50Cents, Prince, Jay Electronica, Dave Grohl & a couple of other people that I would rather not mention here due to the fact that they aren’t returning our calls, Justin Bieber & Lady Gaga! But yea’ that are a bunch of people. We both like a lot of different music so there are a bunch of people we would love to get into the studio with and mix it up. I’m sure it would be super hot with anyone because of what we bring to the table.

WHO WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO COLLABORATE WITH IN IRELAND OR NORTHERN IRELAND AND WHY ?

Let me think about that for a few seconds, Uhhhhhhhhhhh, a little band called U2, Duh! Along with their producer, Daniel L. Cause they are the shit!
