Hip Hop is a culture that was created by and for the people, and when it comes to exibiting that love and passion for the art, nobody displays it like Kil Ripkin the Genereal, AKA The Ghetto Correspondent.
Growing up in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn N.Y., Kil set out on his journey to be the next big thing in Hip Hop. Surely after one listen to Kil Ripkin you will realize very quickly what Hip Hop truly sounds like.
WHO ARE THE BAND MEMBERS AND WHAT DO EACH OF YOU DO IN THE BAND?
Kil Ripkin solo artist out of the states, part of the group, The Coalescence. I’m from Brooklyn New York to be exact and a rapper/producer.
WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU MAKE / PLAY ?
My music is real soulful and consciousness with a little bit of poetic street edge. It covers the feel of every aspect the kid who is growing up in an urban environment could come across.
WHERE ARE YOU FROM ?
I’m from the Coney Island section of Brooklyn in New York City.
HOW DID YOU GUYS GET TOGETHER AND WHEN?
The Coalescence we got together in around 2004 and we were managed under Attic Entertainment, my manager was managing the deejay and the producer and he was managing Torae as well and he thought of the idea so we all worked well, agreed and started working.
WHO ARE YOUR INFLUENCES IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY ?
My inspirations Notorious Big and Michael Jackson. I am also a fan of Slick Rick. To see Notorious Big coming from the same Borough I was from while I was growing up made me feel like I could do it if I worked hard enough.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE HARDEST PART OF BEING IN THE BAND FOR YOU ?
The politics, the little details that goes gone, when it really should be music first.
TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR EARLY DAYS AND HOW THEY DIFFER FROM NOW ?
I was in many groups and my main position in the group was as a producer, the difference is now I have been solo and doing less production. I have been hard at work always perfecting my lyrical ability and vocabulary.
WHAT WAS THE LAST GIG YOU PLAYED, WHAT DID YOU THINK OF IT ?
The last show I did was A3C music festival in Atlanta, it was dope, it was the first time in five years me and Torae had rocked on a stage together, other acts playing included Sandman, Justice League, Kam Moye, Tanya Morgan, a few big acts as far as hip hop is concerned in the states.
HAVE YOU ANY FORTHCOMING GIGS IN IRELAND OR NORTHERN IRELAND ? IF SO ARE YOU LOOKING FOR WARD TO THEM AND WHY ?
Not yet but we are inquiring booking, I need to be out in Ireland, for more information on booking contact me my guy Phill Roche at Kilripkin01@gmail.com. I feel that I would fit in well out there and the people would be very accepting of what I have to say.
DO ANY OF THE BAND HAVE ANY IRISH OR NORTHERN IRISH CONNECTIONS ? IF SO TELL US ABOUT THEM ?
My last name is Sinclair so that is pretty Irish. Ha. But my producer I am working with has relatives in Cork County. He stays in Chicago though.
WHAT’S THE MOST SUCCESSFUL THING YOU GUYS HAVE DONE TO DATE ?
The most humbling thing has happened was when my group, The Coalescence got nominated for underground song of the year. But it was real dope to be nominated and inspiring to chase dreams that you otherwise thought were could not be obtainable.
WHO HAS HELPED YOU THE MOST GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY ?
I would have to stay myself. My dedication to stick with me and the people around me who influence me to do what I do. This is some real advice, always keep real people around you because when matters get serious they are the ones that are really going to help you out.
WHAT’S COMING NEXT ?
Dropping my highly awaited solo album this summer and touring all over the world, hopefully Ireland. A lot of performing and working with other artists, expanding my horizons getting more people to know who Kil Ripkin is.
IS IT HARD BEING A NEW BAND IN TODAY’S INDUSTRY ?
Definitely, politics, if you don’t conform or accept what these politics are its difficult to get your music heard and your point across. This means working with certain names so people can recognize you and other small details such as this.
HOW IMPORTANT IS THE INTERNET AND SOCIAL NETWORK SITES TO THE SUCCESS OF YOUR BAND/MUSIC ?
Currently it is helping me out a ton. It is different now. It helps more now than the pass, shout out to Phill Roche for the help of management too.
