BELFAST beauty queen Gemma Garrett launched her DJ career recently at a secret gig in Derry.
The former Miss Great Britain has been training for the last eight months under the watchful eye of Clubland maestro Micky Modelle took to the decks at Club Inferno in Knockloughrin.
A huge music fan, 27-year-old Gemma was asked to star in one of international music producer and DJ Micky Modelle’s forthcoming video and she started DJing with him as a joke.
But Micky, from Belfast, realised she had talent and has been training her ever since to be ready for her first gig.
I have always been interested in club music and used to go clubbing with my friends a lot, she said.
After shooting the video, I danced at one of Micky’s shows in the Odyssey Arena and we became great friends. That’s how we started working with each other.
It all started out as a bit of a joke and a bit of fun because we are quite good friends but then he realised I had a natural talent for music and the beat.
Micky has been so patient with me. He taught me at my own pace and he is very good at teaching. It would have been hard for me without him supporting me but I have the best on my side. It has been really fun. After months of intense training and hard work Gemma feels she’s ready to take the Clubland world by storm.
I do feel confident enough because I do have people like Micky and Stephen on my side. They are two of my biggest influences and I am so grateful to them but I just need to get out there on my own. A DJ tour of the UK is in the works and Gemma hopes to go back to Ibiza but this time she’ll be spinning on the decks.
And she wants to make one thing clear her DJ set will be 100 per cent Gemma Garrett. It’s going to be Clubland music but it is going to be influenced by me. I just love commercial dance music, I love the beats. That is exactly what I would want to listen to on a night out with the girls.
No one will be picking the music for me and choosing the set list, it’s all me. This is something I really want to make my own and add my own wee touch. It is going to be the music I like and the tracks I like.
