paddy-courtney-4bFollowing his antics on Friday’s Late Late Show, Paddy Power have decided to payout on stand-up comedian Paddy Courtney as Pat Kenny’s replacement on RTE’s iconic chat show.

37-year old Courtney was on the show to promote his forthcoming solo show at Vicar Street on Sat 25th of April. At the end of his interview the Dublin born funny-man whipped out a betting docket showing that he had backed himself with Paddy Power for Pat’s job at odds of 33/1. Proving that he’s game-for-a-laugh Pat promptly swapped seats and allowed himself to be interviewed by Courtney much to the delight of the live audience who gave them a standing ovation.

Paddy Power said “Seen as Paddy did actually take over hosting duties on the Late Late Show, if only for 5 minutes, we’re going to pay out on him. But to be fair to all other backers their bets will still stand until a permanent replacement for Pat is announced”

In a good hearted gesture Paddy Courtney volunteered to donate all €340 from his winning bet on himself to the Down Syndrome Association of Ireland. Paddy Courtney said “I’m still in shock that Pat went along with it, so I have to say a huge thanks to him and to everyone who backed me at 33/1. I would like to officially withdraw from the running as I want to concentrate on comedy and acting for the next while. I’m still waiting on RTE to ring me with news of my own show though!”
Paddy Power are paying out over €5,000 to punters who backed Courtney and have confirmed that all other bets placed so far on the next host will continue to stand. Miriam O’Callaghan remains the bookies red-hot 2/5 favourite for the job.
Paddy Courtney will be bringing his new stand up show to Vicar Street, beginning on Saturday 25th April 2009. A repeat of Friday’s Late Late Show can by seen at 12.30am this Tuesday morning on RTE.
